Culture brief: Selected madness

Remember the good ol’ days of the variety show? No, you probably don’t; you probably weren’t born yet. Well lucky for you, The Red Herring is rejuvenating the seventies TV fad, hosting a night of music, comedy, and banter: Mad Selection. Tonight at Les Trois Minots (3812 St. Laurent) you can groove to Hayden Simpson’s smooth laptop sampling, move to Rupert Common’s mad beats, or giggle at Katie Burrell’s stand-up. It will also be the premiere of the film Your League: A League for You, a McGill-student mockumentary about the intramural basketball league. The Montreal-based reggae group INWORD will be headlining the show, sharing their spiritual vibrations – their drummer is a founding member of the local Kalmunity jazz collective. Common’s and Burrell’s moms will be manning the door. It’s five bones to get in, and there will be hell to pay if you try to sneak in.
