What is the Daily Publications Society?

The Daily Publications Society (SPD) is the student-run, non-profit organization that publishes The Daily and Le Délit. DPS manages the finances and logistics of publishing the print editions and maintaining their web presence. The editorial lines of the Daily and Délit remain independent of the DPS.

Is the DPS student-run? What does that mean?

The Daily and Délit editorial teams and their contributors, who have total power over the content of their respective newspapers, and the DPS board members, who look after the legal, financial and operational aspects of the organization, are all students. Student representation on the DPS ensures independent media coverage by and for McGill students. Advertising department employees have no power over newspaper content.

What do editors get paid for?

The hours editors devote to Le Délit and The Daily often approach or exceed 30 hours a week. This makes it impossible for many of them to hold down a job outside the newspaper to support themselves. Like employees of other student groups, editors receive a monthly stipend of $290, without which some students would not be able to devote the time necessary to the job.

What role does Le Délit play at McGill?

Le Délit has been McGill's only French-language newspaper since 1977. It provides a platform for diverse expression, covering news of importance to McGill University and its student association, the SSMU. Le Délit's role on campus is that of a public broadcaster of the issues and challenges facing the McGill community.

How is the DPS connected to McGill?

DPS is independent of McGill and the SSMU. We pay rent to the SSMU for the use of our offices, but we are not under the authority of their executive council or by-laws. We have a Protocole d'Accord (PA) with the University because they are in charge of collecting the student fees allocated to us.

Why support the DPS?

DPS is a source of investigative and current affairs journalism on campus, as well as a platform for opinion pieces and creative work. Since McGill does not offer a journalism program, DPS gives interested students the opportunity to gain field experience in research and writing.

Continuing to offer a diverse and varied journalistic service to the student community depends on DPS's ability to fund the editorial activities of Le Délit and The Daily.

For several months now, Meta's news blocking has severely reduced the visibility of Le Délit and The Daily and their ability to effectively reach the student community. These two newspapers are essential to ensuring informed democratic dialogue on campus. The increase in DPS's fees will give the Délit and Daily more resources to deal with the media crisis.

Le Délit and The Daily are student-run: any student can get involved as a contributor, editor or board member.

Le Délit brings French-speaking students and the McGill community closer together, serving as an essential link between McGill and Montreal.
