Note: Faculty and staff who wish to sign on to this letter may do so using this Google Form.

We, faculty and staff at McGill University, endorse the Undergraduate Student Union’s recent adoption of the Palestine Solidarity Policy, which campaigns for a demonstration of “leadership in matters of human rights and social justice.” Generations of students have played a central role in advocating for justice, sustainability, and anti-apartheid measures. We support the students’ right to utilize democratic channels in order to campaign for these matters that impact the entire academic community.

Far from being divisive or exceptional, we see the adoption of this policy as a continuation of a long-standing history of student leadership aimed at bringing meaningful changes to their educational arenas. We strongly believe that the Student Union must function as an independent body uncoerced by the university’s administration in order to fulfill its mandate, which includes upholding democratic processes and elections — regardless of whether or not they are agreeable to the administration, ourselves, or any other actor within or outside the university. We look forward to seeing McGill University respect the democratic results of this election and we continue to commend policies that demonstrate a commitment to human rights and social justice which will only enrich our campus.

As concerned members of the McGill community, we want to recognize the great and competent student labor behind this democratic election, and express our pride that students at McGill continue to push and challenge our university to be better.

As faculty and staff members of the McGill University community, we respond to Provost Manfredi’s MRO pre-emptively dismissing the student-initiated petition calling on the university to divest from Israel and honour its commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

A central complaint of the petition is that Palestinian students and those who advocate for their rights face intimidation and bullying at McGill. Whether or not one agrees with the rest of the petition, it is incumbent on the University administration to take this complaint seriously, which the MRO manifestly does not do. Indeed, in its peremptory assumption of bad faith, the MRO is but the latest example of the very intimidation that the petition highlights.

This clear double standard raises alarm bells. The administration’s frequent interventions in student politics and campus debates over Israel-Palestine – from Principal Fortier’s in 2016 to Deputy Provost Fabrice Labeau’s in 2019 to Provost Manfredi’s last week – all invoke EDI selectively and invidiously, consistently extending protections to one side and rebuke to another.

This stance serves to diminish understanding rather than to nourish and sustain it. It undermines faith in the university’s intentions both within our gates and beyond.

Signatories:

We, the undersigned faculty members of McGill University, publicly condemn Quebec’s Bill 62 and denounce its divisive and discriminatory politics. In specifically targeting Muslim women, Bill 62 flies in the face of McGill University’s stated mission to promote “principles of academic freedom, integrity, responsibility, equity, and inclusiveness.” It is thus our professional, ethical, and intellectual responsibility to resist this harmful legislation. We state here that:
1. The provisions of Bill 62 will not be enforced in our classrooms, offices, or events.
2. We will do our best to support community members whose sense of safety, access, and inclusion has already been violated by the passage of Bill 62 and by Islamophobia and recent anti-Islam violence in Quebec.
We stand in solidarity on this issue with many other groups and individuals across McGill, Quebec, and Canada who are speaking out against Bill 62. We add our voices to others who are calling for the revocation of Bill 62 and a rejection of the exclusionary and
discriminatory ideologies on which this legislation stands.
